Dance to Health Project 2026

In partnership with Pavilion Dance South West, Dorset charity Artsreach is excited to launch a second series of its popular twelve-week Dance Because You Can workshops for the over 60’s, with events starting in January at The Exchange in Sturminster Newton and The Mowlem in Swanage.

It’s proven that dance is not only great for lifting your mood, but it’s also great for your health. Specifically designed to suit older people who would benefit from low level fitness, socialising and generally having fun, this new series of gentle classes will be led by a specially trained teacher from Pavilion Dance South West.

Yvonne Gallimore, Artsreach Assistant Director said, “We are very grateful to both the Britford Bridge Trust and Dorset Community Foundation for their continued support of these sessions, enabling us to run a second series of workshop in North Dorset, whilst expanding the offer to reach individuals living in Purbeck. As the winter months approach and we all tend to spend more time indoors, these workshops have actively helped to connect people with each other in their local communities and help reduce loneliness and isolation.”

Launching on Thursday 8 January and running every week until 26 March, Dance Because You Can classes cost just £8 and are open to anyone over 60 who would like to improve their fitness, have fun and meet new people – no dance experience is necessary and post-class refreshments and social time are included. Those interested in finding out more can attend the first session as a taster, before committing to the 12 weeks. Those who are not mobile enough to attend alone are asked to bring a carer for more support.
