A Song for Dorset

Online PremiereThis event has now finished

Composer Karen Wimhurst’s new Song for Dorset - When Time Lost Its Edge, will be premiered online from 12:30pm on 4 August 2021

A nationwide project, A Song for Us saw 15 leading music creators commissioned to write new songs inspired by the people of their county.

A Song for Dorset – When Time Lost Its Edge by Karen Wimhurst was commissioned by Sound UK, in partnership with Artsreach and Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts.

Writing a song to reflect people’s time during the Covid-19 pandemic in Dorset, Karen invited people to answer 3 simple questions. With lyrics drawn directly from people’s words, the result is a song that captures people’s diverse experiences and hopes for the future.

A Song for Us recognises the positive role community choirs and ensembles play in keeping people connected. The commissioned song has been written for and performed by Palida Choir, VIVA! Dorchester Women’s Choir, Dorset County Hospital Staff Choir and students from Thomas Hardy School, Dorchester.

A Song for Us celebrates our community during the COVID 19 pandemic; it seeks to encapsulate the coming together and solidarity. It recognises the nationwide losses we have experienced, whether at a distance or personally. Above all it celebrates the power of music to bring us together, whether as creators, performers or listeners.

We hope you can join us online for the premiere of this brand new Song for Dorset. The piece will then be available to listen to online for 12 months
